RECIPE FOR A KILLER PRESENTATION
KNOW YOUR Audience It’s not about what you want to say to them, it’s about what they need to hear from you in order to be inspired and motivated by your message
DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF If you don’t do something unique compared to all the other presenters the audience has heard, they won’t remember you
HAVE A HIGH ENERGY LEVEL
USE NATURAL HUMOR (NOT JOKES) Humorous quotes work well, especially during your introductions.
BODY LANGUAGE Use hands, facial expressions, and eyes to keep the audience engaged
KEEP IT SIMPLE Simple explanations coupled with simple graphics equal one amazing presentation
You usually don’t notice when you say “ums”, “uhs”, or any other useless word frequently, but the audience does. WATCH YOUR AND ums uhs
Interact with your audience and create a conversation
EYE contact Practice using it
SLOW DOWN Consciously slow your speech down and add pauses for emphasis
DONT PLAN GESTURES Planned gestures look false because they don’t match your other involuntary body cues
PAUSE A pause, whether two seconds or 10 seconds, brings all the attention right where you should want it – on you. II
Entertain AS MUCH AS INFORM Why not reward them with something interesting or funny. It is perfectly fine to start off with something besides the point but entertaining.
REVIEW YOUR PRESENTATION AND PICK ONE Feeling IDENTIFY THE ONE KEY MESSAGE Confident RELAXED YOU NEED TO SHARE GRATEFUL WITH YOUR AUDIENCE
KEEP IT SHORT & IMPACTFUL
BE HONEST Make sure you tell the truth even if they don’t want to hear it because they will respect you for that and it will will make you more human
FOCUS MORE ON WHAT YOU WILL SAY HOW YOU WILL SAY IT RATHER THAN ON HAVING THE COOLEST SLIDES
TELL STORIES and talk to the slides, but by no means read the slides
USE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY Be prepared to cover your content in the time allotted and leave ample time for discussion or questions.
CHECK OUT THE MEETING ROOM AUDIOVISUAL SET-UP Get to the room early and ensure you're comfortable with the set-up.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRESENTATION MEDIUM Whether it be PowerPoint, Google Slides or Prezi
TEST YOUR SETUP BEFORE THE PRESENTATION Can you see your visual aids, slides or overheads clearly from the back of the room?
PRACTICE You have to repeatedly practice your presentation to improve it
